Charles R. Abele
June 12, 1938 - May 2, 2025
Beloved Father, Husband, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Friend Charles (Charley) Abele passed away at the age of 86 on May 2nd, 2025, of natural causes.
Born on “The Hill”, in St. Louis, Missouri, Charley was the only child of Harold and Dorothy Ann Abele. Always an excellent student, Charley graduated as Valedictorian of his Cleveland High School class. After graduation he accepted a scholarship to Washington University for his undergraduate degree and completed his Juris Doctorate from St. Louis University.
He began his law career in the public sector with the Public Defenders’ office in St.Louis. He then moved on to work for Gene McNary in the St. Louis County Prosecutors Office rising to First Assistant Prosecutor. Moving into private practice, he worked for several firms finally settling, into practice for himself focusing primarily on Railroad Injury Law.
He was a voracious reader. Even in his final days, he would devour the New York Times and be interested in discussing its’ contents. He had the ability to surprise many new acquaintances with his breadth of knowledge and interest in topics from physics to fishing. He was passionate for both advocating and contributing to Environmental causes. He was a founder and Board Member of Missouri Votes Conservation. He had a quick wit, loved good food and company, travel and was always interested in the activities of kids and grandkids. His absence will leave a large hole in the lives, of family, friends and all who loved him.
Charley is survived by his wife Eleanor (Ellie) Abele of Denver, CO. as well as seven children, 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
