Charles “Paka” Jaten
July 14, 1943 - July 11, 2025
With heavy hearts and deep love, we share that our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Charles “Charlie” Jaten, passed away peacefully at home on July 11th, just days before his 82nd birthday.
Charlie’s life was full of purpose, joy, and laughter. He earned degrees from American University and the University of Wisconsin and spent his career in leadership at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he championed equity and community. But Charlie’s legacy goes far beyond his work. He was a man of warmth, mischief, and humor—famous for his practical jokes and perfectly timed one-liners. His playful spirit brought joy to every room and left lasting memories with everyone he met.
Charlie loved Colorado—its crisp mountain air, the serenity of his garden, and the quiet refuge of his cabin nestled in the woods. Being surrounded by nature brought him deep peace and joy. A devoted dog lover, he trained service dogs for people with disabilities and volunteered passionately during the Obama campaigns, always standing up for democracy and human rights.
Charlie’s passing leaves a deep void in our family, one we’re learning to navigate by holding close the many beautiful memories of our dear Paka—his laughter, his stories, and his love.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Darragh; his children Keefe, Elin, and Thecla; and his nine grandchildren: Zoie, Aydra, Maizelynn, Leah, Madi, Raegan, Ella, Ayden, and AnnaBrita.
